Recruitment of Staff in General Practice – Key Points

Please ensure the following aspects have been considered prior to recruiting someone into a role. With the expansion of roles in General Practice and PCNs, we appreciate that this has become more challenging.

  1. Please consider the scope of practice of the role and whether someone has the suitable qualifications and/or experience.
  2. For clinical roles review registration details with the appropriate regulator, as applicable. For individuals who are new to working in the UK please ensure the relevant registration is now held with UK regulators.
  3. Please consider any relevant CQC information.
  4. For Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme recruitment please review any relevant contractual information (e.g., PCN DES) to ensure an individual meets the required standards for reimbursement and to ensure patient safety.
  5. For individuals who have international clinical qualifications and are seeking placements or employment opportunities whilst awaiting registration with the appropriate UK regulator, please carefully consider the scope of practice they can undertake without registration in place.
  6. Once in the role please review the relevant training requirements, where applicable (a summary of some of ARRS training requirements can be found at ARRs-Training-Summary-v32.pdf (glosprimarycare.co.uk)).

Where there are any queries, doubts, or concerns, please do consider reviewing information on the training hub website or on the relevant page within the ARRS repository. Within the repository, you can find job descriptions, supervision requirements, training needs and pre-requisite requirements for roles. This can be found at: ARR Repository Archive – Gloucestershire Primary Care Workforce Centre (glosprimarycare.co.uk). If there are any further queries the training hub and workforce team are happy to discuss with you and support the safe recruitment of staff. Please contact the team on glicb.pcwc@nhs.net as required. If in doubt, please ask.

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships offer an exciting opportunity to help employers recruit and develop new staff and support the development and progression of existing staff.

Smaller employers (those who pay less than £3 million per annum in staff salaries) will be able to use Government funding to fund up to 90% of the costs of these apprenticeships and even use a levy transfer for fund 100% of the educational costs.
